A Great Australian Train Journey

The Ghan – A Great Australian Train Journey

The Ghan is a long-distance railway located in the southwest of Australia. The line runs from Adelaide to Darwin and follows the Tanami and Riveroses rivers. The line has a number of different landscapes and different countries crossing the line means crossing part of the Australian continent and so is a cause for celebration.

The Ghan is ancient in Australian history, dating back to 1887, when the line was first constructed. However, the line has depreciated in value over the years, to the point where buying shares in the company is now fairly expensive.

Stations along the line include the two volcanoes of the noonday pyramids of doom, which are located at Stony Creek lookout, and the Grassy Glacier favorite dining stop. The line also follows the path of the world’s second longest suspension bridge, the Incegewood estuary bridge.

The various parts of the railway experience can be compared to a trip on a Bell Ranger, where different regions and times of day can be explored. However, the Ghan is regarded as being the ultimate in luxury, with dining table and lounge facilities available only on very select trains.

The railway is now run by a diesel engine, with electricity serving some stations. As a result of this, the train usually runs at night, taking just over eight hours to complete the journey. This gives passengers the opportunity to see a fair bit of the scenery between Adelaide and Darwin, as electricity does not reach nearly so far.

The train also features a wine trolley service, where passengers can choose from a selection of wines while relaxing in the rail cabin, often taking in the view of the outback. This is a good way to get to know the locals and their wines.

The diesel engine is also equipped with a hot-press steam-driven coffee machine and a mini-olitan peeler, allowing passengers to create their own cappuccinos, latte-oos, and unflavoured chocolates. Passengers can also choose from a variety of breakfast cereals, including Enjoy by oui, Flappy Things, and Kinder doubtlessly No-Stir Cubes.

Finally, the Ghan features a spa car which, in true railway fashion, has a massage chair, a steam bath, and a treatment room, en suite. The two therapeutic rooms offer a wide variety of services, including aromatherapy, Swedish massage, body treatment, and personalized neck and body massages. Furthermore, there is also the room, which has its own gym, sauna, and Jacuzzi, as well as a reception area and television.

Alberton’s Ghan railway isn’t just a great day out for the whole family – it’s a great investment, too. With easy access to Flinders, Fraser, Adelaide, Kangaroo Island, and the Great Dividing Range, the Ghan is an excellent way to experience the natural environment of the Whitsunday Islands and the Central West area. The railway itself is accessible via railway stations in Adelaide, Flinders, Perth, and Darwin, and there are several buses that link the railway to bus services.

Although the railway is often considered to be old-fashioned, many passengers find the experience exhilarating and convenient. If you’re planning on visiting the Whitsunday Islands, ensure you book a Ghan train spot, you’ll be well rewarded.
